The samovar is a two-tiered kettle: the lower tier, the kettle, contains hot water, and the upper tier, the teapot, contains tea infused in little water, and is used to make tea. When the tea is served, the strong, concentrated tea is diluted with the hot water that is added to the cup using the tap in the kettle section. The water is heated by heating coils.

The kettle must be filled before it is switched on (the samovar must not heat up when empty). As soon as the desired temperature is reached, the electric samovar switches off. When the water cools down, the heating starts up again.

Samovars are intimately linked to the ritual of tea, shared with family or guests, particularly in Russia and Central Asia. Thanks to its ingenious design, the samovar ensures that hot water is always available at low cost.
