Which plastics are used for Gastronorm containers?

GN containers, mainly used in the catering and hotel industry for food storage and preparation, are made from different types of plastic to meet specific needs. Each type of plastic has its own characteristics that make it suitable for different kitchen applications. GN containers are also available in stainless steel, but plastic versions are sometimes preferred for their lightness and flexibility of use.

In this category we only present PET plastic containers, but you will find other categories on our website where we present melamine, polypropylene and polycarbonate containers.

Here are the characteristics of the main plastic materials, other than PET, used for plastic catering containers.

Polypropylene: Heat resistant (typically up to 100°C), lightweight and durable, it is also resistant to impact and chemicals. Suitable for storing hot or cold food and can be used in microwaves and dishwashers.

Polycarbonate: Transparent, allowing you to see the contents without opening the container. Highly impact resistant and can withstand temperatures up to 120°C. Perfect for intensive use in the kitchen, especially for hot food or buffet presentation.

High density polyethylene (HDPE): resistant to low temperatures (down to -40°C), ideal for freezing. It is also durable and impact resistant. Mainly used for the storage of frozen or chilled foods.

ABS: good resistance to impact and moderate heat. Also lightweight and durable. Less common than other materials, it can be used for special containers where shock resistance is required.

Tritan: BPA free, shock and heat resistant. It is also transparent like polycarbonate but without the risk of BPA leaching into food. Suitable for environments where transparency and food safety are a priority.

Melamine: Can be used for freezer storage and indoor display. Not suitable for cooking. Good impact resistance, easy to clean.

What are the benefits of PET plastic?

Lightweight: PET is lightweight, making it ideal for applications that require lightweight materials while maintaining strength.

Mechanical strength: PET has good mechanical strength, making it suitable for the manufacture of containers and packaging that need to protect their contents.

Gas barrier: It provides a good barrier to gases such as oxygen, helping to extend the shelf life of food and drink.

Recyclability: PET is highly recyclable. It can be recycled for use in a variety of applications where moisture resistance is required.

Cost: PET is relatively cheap to produce, making it an attractive material for many industries.
